Finding Your Why for CrossFit
Let’s talk about something we don’t always focus on in CrossFit: Why do we do this? Why do we show up, sweat, push ourselves, and come back for more?
Simon Sinek talks about “Finding Your Why,” and it’s something I think about a lot in CrossFit. Your "why" is your reason for being here. And guess what? It’s different for everyone—and it can even change from day to day.
My Why Through the Years
When I first started CrossFit 14 years ago, my "why" was pretty simple: I wanted to get in better shape. I hadn’t done anything like CrossFit before, and I was just looking to try something new and push myself. Over time, that evolved. I wanted to get stronger, faster, and keep improving.
But something else crept in from day one: It was fun. And that’s been a constant why for me. Sure, I've gone through different phases—lose weight, compete, mental health—but no matter what, I’ve always come back because I love it. Right now, my main why is to live a healthier, longer life, but fun is still right there too.
What’s Your Why?
I want you to think about your why. Why do you CrossFit? It might not be the same every day, and that’s okay. Some days, it’s about getting stronger. Other days, it’s just about showing up and moving your body. Your why can—and probably will—change.
Here are some examples of what might be driving you:
- Maybe you’re looking for a mental break—an hour to escape the stress of life.
- Maybe it’s about being part of a community, hanging out with friends, and having a good time.
- Maybe you’re all about getting fitter and healthier—chasing that stronger, faster version of yourself.
- Or maybe you’re training for something big—an event, competition, or even just a personal milestone.
It could be a mix of all of these! Every day might be different, and that’s totally fine.
How Does Your Why Impact Your Workouts?
Here’s the thing: knowing your why can change the way you approach the gym. If today’s why is to de-stress, you’re probably going to take a more laid-back approach. If your why is to push hard and hit a new PR, you’re going to show up with a different intensity.
Here’s how it might play out:
- Need a break from life? Treat the gym like your escape. Come in, let go, and just move.
- Chasing better health? Be consistent, and take the long view. Every workout is a step toward that goal.
- Looking to compete? Push yourself, focus on those little details, and see how far you can go.
Take a Minute to Find Your Why
I encourage you to take a few minutes and think about your why. Why do you CrossFit? What’s driving you? And how can you use that to motivate yourself. Your why matters, and once you recognize it, it can fuel your workouts and give your gym time more meaning.
So, what’s your why today?
